Which type of tile is best for showers?

While we can give our personal opinion, your preferences on the type of style you want for your shower is what matters. These are the descriptions on the type of tiles that are installed on modern showers today.

Marble

An elegant natural stone. Beautiful, upscale appearance, easily polished. This type of material is porous, which means that it will require sealing. Can scratch and stain easily. Typical costs ranges between $10-$25 per sq ft, and the most specialty ones as high as $45 per sq ft. Can be slippery for shower floors but stands out compared to other types of materials.

Porcelain

Known for its smooth texture, classic look and shine, porcelain tile is one of the most popular type of tiles used in residential homes. Quite like ceramic tiles but outstanding differences. It can mimic natural stone such as marble and even granite. It is much stronger and durable than ceramic tile. It offers superior protection against moisture and humidity thanks to its non-porous surface. Typical costs can range from $2 to $36 per sq ft.

Ceramic

Sometimes difficult to distinguish from porcelain tile, ceramic tile has been one of the popular options for decades. It does have its downsides though. If you choose ceramic tiles that are not glazed, it will be vulnerable to moisture infiltration which can result in difficulty to keep it clean. Unglazed portions of the tile will not resist water. Ceramic tile has excellent heat resistance. It is not recommended for outdoors in any type of environment. It can crack or break easily so great care and maintenance is a must to avoid repairs. Typical costs range from $.25 to $25 per sq ft.

Slate

Best known for its unique look, natural slate tile brings an attractive look to your shower. It is very durable, resistant to scratches, cracks, and chips. It needs to be sealed regularly to avoid stains. Typical costs ranges from $5 to $12 per sq ft.

Travertine

A very popular stone, travertine tile stands out for its earth tone colors such as tan and browns. It feels like marble, durable but has a delicate surface especially for showers. It will require periodic sealing. Typical costs ranges from $13 to $40 per sq ft.

Granite

Made by processing igneous rock, granite is not man-made which puts this type of material apart from many. Extremely durable, resistant to scratches and stains. Its surface is impenetrable to water, which is a good option for shower walls, but can be slippery on floors. Typical costs range from $3 to $45 per sq ft.

Glass

Probably the most popular and less maintenance type of tile that is installed in today’s modern world. Exceptional beauty that is reflected by its different colors, variety of shapes, and transparency. 100% water resistant and easy to clean. Only downside is the cost as this type of material id one of the most expensive to purchase. Typical costs range from $10 to $50 per sq ft.
